Domestic violence against women has increased significantly in Spain in recent years. In Spain, little is made of women, and it is common to look down on them, especially by men. Since 2003, 1,095 women have been murdered by their husbands or partners. In the last year (2021), 37 women were murdered by a former or current partner. There has also been domestic violence against children in the home and 39 children have been murdered since 2013. 40% of women in Spain have been sexually harassed and most of all women in Spain have been abused, including 12 million women.
Covid-19 had a bad impact on everyone, but it had a significant impact on Spanish society. Curfews had a negative impact on home life and led to a sharp increase in violence at home. Calls to the helplines became much more as the covid-19 epidemic progressed. Today, women's rights are being fought for, mostly at home, and people are starting to be more aware of violence in general, in Spain.
New laws were recently introduced, the main goal of the new laws were to deal more with violence against women, and it was also stated that it is now not necessary to state that the woman must have proof if she has been subjected to sexual violence. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is held on Friday, November 25th, where groups of women gather and protest violence against women. They usually shout together in chorus (in Spanish) "we want to be alive" and "they didn't die, they were murdered". Spain's Ministry of Equality chose the slogan "Together" in the protest.
